Check if there is a trial version of the Iray plugin for 3ds Max 2020 available, and see if installing that gets you access to the material data.
Examine what the objects look like once they are loaded into 3ds Max 2020, can you see the material parameters in the material editor as is, or is the data inaccessible? I'm not very familiar with Iray and what is accessible, but I can do my best to make a few recommendations of what I would do I were in your shoes and this was super critical. In addition, I don't believe that any presets are included to move from Iray materials to something like the 3ds Max Physical Material. In some more recent releases of 3ds Max, a scene conversion tool has been included in order to aid in the migration of materials and scene objects, however this tool has a requirement that the source data be readable and accessible within 3ds Max (requiring an active plugin in most cases). Hi I don't believe there is anything out of the box that would work for this.
